Anna Hazare is a shrewd political strategist.
He consciously exploited the esteem in which Mahatma Gandhi is held in India to raise his own image in the public mind.
Behind the stage during his fast, he put up a MASSIVE photo of Gandhi.
I objected sternly to this (in an old blog post).
For Anna is not a Gandhian by any stretch of imagination, and has no idea why Gandhi did what he did. He uses fasting, for instance, as a tool of blackmail, not a last resort tool of self-purification, when persuasion entirely fails.
And he has no compunction in using violence to enforce his will.
Gandhi would have strongly objected to his photo being used by Anna Hazare.

But now (through this HUGE deception) that he has become the "voice" of the common Indian, he has blocked out Arvind Kejriwal from using his photo.
"I will not go for their campaign. I have told them not to use my photo or my name in their campaign. You fight on your own" [Source]
Without the "Anna" cap, the Anna image, Kejriwal is now only left with Gandhi's image, and his own.
Even with Hazare's support, the chance of Kejriwal's "party" securing more than 1 or 2 seats in parliament in 2014 is asymptotically close to zero. Without Hazare's support, Kejriwal's own seat must necessarily be in doubt (except in Delhi or NCR).
Much ado about nothing.
A fisco just like the Baba Ramdev drama.
It seems that these demagogues come to the people without any long term plan, without a long term strategy. They "experiment" with the masses.
It is quite possible that as a result of this huge fiasco, the Indian voter and public will be put off entirely by any future "anti-corruption" movements. Once bitten, twice shy. The youth who are associated with IAC must be deeply confused and disappointed. They are young, and they have been misled. Now their "movement" has split, and they don't know whom to "pick". And why.
We are back to the hard grind of systematic preparation and HONEST messaging for policy change.
We need to prepare the nation for change.

Well said Sanjeev. Aravind is doing a big mistake by jumping into electoral politics. As you said rightly, he may win one or two seats. Electoral politics is not child’s play. Even mainstream political parties with their massive organizational structure find it difficult to make it. Why should people vote for Arvind’s party when they don’t even know the candidate contesting. A candidate should do real good ground work before jumping into electrical politics. I wish these people listen to your idea of grooming leaders first and then contest en masse.
Rest everything will fail. No doubt about that.
Lessons everywhere for fledgling organizations like FTI, if they are willing to learn. This blunder is proof that just because a group of well meaning educated people get together to form a movement/party, it doesnt guarantee success. The earlier debacle by that IITians-party also comes to mind. Ego,corruption,haste..these aren’t necessarily absent in educated or so called intellectual citizens. That’s why politics is difficult. There’s no right education for it. No mantra for success. Even “success” is difficult to define. what is success? Is getting in power success? If so, even Mulayam and Mayawati have been successful. Or Manmohan, who has been PM for last 8 years has also been successful.
Being a good statesman requires a rare combination of insight, strategy, determination, persuasive power and integrity. And even then you could “fail”
Sanjeev, how does FTI policies plan to deal with these frequent strikes and militant labor unionism that is prevalent in India? what is it that could be changed here so that we never witness another strike by atleast govt.servants running essential services? Not read your book, but a brief answer would suffice
My experience in this area goes back nearly 15 years now, and FTI is entirely different from any existing organisation in India. Its members will NOT contest elections till the country wants them to. That’s quite a different standard to those like PPI who want to force themselves on the Indian people.
FTI is about right people, right persuasion and then – if asked by the people of India to contest elections – the right offer of governance to the people.

Persuasion. The right persuasion involves taking everyone in the country along in the journey. Unions perform a valuable role in a capitalist society. I have no doubt that unions can be shown the benefits of capitalism for their worker members.
