OK, this blog post's title is more provocative than it should be.
Hindus such as Vivekananda, Ambedkar and Rajaji – and many members of the Freedom Team of India - have argued in favour of liberty and economic liberalisation.
But the BJP and the Hindutva brigade are DEAD AGAINST liberty. (See these:
- BJP, a party without principles. FDI in retail supported in 2004 but opposed today!
- Kautilya would have strongly favoured FDI and opposed Anna Hazare's approach to alcohol

Ambedkar was one of the greatest Indian proponents of liberty. But he is hated by many "Hindus" because he took thousands of "Dalits" – their slaves – en-masse out of Hinduism into Buddhism.
But now Chandra Bhan Prasad has pointed out this alarming (alarming to "Hindus") fact (see:
http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2008/08/30/world/20080829CASTE_index.html?src=tp&smid=fb-share)
His has argued that "that India's economic liberalization is about to do the unthinkable: destroy the caste system". Where would that leave the Hindutva fanatics who can't live without chamars, bhangis and other such slaves?
Caste is a form of racism. To the extent caste exists, Hindus are RACISTS. Anyone who accepts the caste system is, in my view, racist.
I have advocated the abolition of the caste system ever since I began to think – by age 12.
Let's hope that Chandra Bhan Prasad is right in his prognosis about Hinduism's future. In the meanwhile I need to get in touch with Prasad and interest him in joining FTI.
Request: Chandra Bhan Prasad runs a very bad website (this) without even an email contact. If anyone knows his email ID pl. send it to me.

Sharad Bailur:
Yes. there is a certain inevitability here: That the democratisation of prosperity that will be the outcome of liberalisation. Once that happens, and dalits rise to economic levels that give them the freedom to refuse to do the work they did earlier, we shall have a more egalitarian society, but not a society that demands servants at its beck and call.
Sanjeev Sabhlok:
And that’s why the “Hindus” hate anything to do with democracy and liberty. That’s going to make the “Dalit” their boss, their “ruler”. That’s an intolerable thought to many if not most “Hindus”.
just from looking at Chandra Bhan Prasad’s website I found his email as pioneercbp@yahoo.com
Thanks. I tried but couldn’t find it. Will write to him asap.
Hi Sanjeev,
I do not agree with your comments ” HIndus are racists. Caste system was designed for separation of power. It was designed by rishi Bhrigu and Vashist. The idea was
There are 4 basic source of power
1) Knowledge
2) Money
3) Weapons
4) Land
Both of them said that no one should have more than two ( ideally 1) source of power out of these 4 because that leads to concentration of power in hands of very few people ( an elite club). We see that happening in India, and other countries as well
Caste system worked very well for centuries because no one section of society had all the powers
Brahman did not have money but control over policy ( modern day senators)
Kshatriya had weapons but did not have control over policy making
Vaishyas were business people (money) but no control over weapons and policy making etc
now we can say may be this is not relevant in today’s world in its old form, may be we need to eliminate it or modify it. But the purpose behind it was not racism. No one system or policy is good for ever and needs to be changed/discontinued but that does not mean that whole hindu religion promotes racism
“I have advocated the abolition of the caste system ever since I began to think – by age 12.”
How do you “abolish” caste sysetm? Using what means?
Re: Ambedkar was one of the greatest Indian proponents of liberty. But he is hated by many “Hindus” because he took thousands of “Dalits” – their slaves – en-masse out of Hinduism into Buddhism.
As I understand, Amberdakar has been votary of reservations, minority politics etc since his induction into politics (during freedom struggle-I stand apologised if it is not so). Today if politics in India (and hence the entire bureaucracy, education and every filed) has been affected far worse than the plague decreasing efficiency only because of this (Qualified people are precondition to the good policies-vicious circle).
Isn’t this likely to affect his reputation given the inherent contradiction in between ‘reservation’ (construed as care for Dalits, minorities etc) and ‘liberty and freedom’? It may just help me better understand him.
I agree that there is a contradiction between Ambedkar’s overall thrust for liberty and his pandering to the idea of reservations. In any event I recall reading that he only argued for 10 years. It is the Hindutva brigade (BJP etc.) that have extended reservations. I’ll shortly write on this.
According to me, this entire logic is little off. The current youth in India want to get rid of the reservation system.
India needs attitude shift. It has nothing to do with any religion. The “old goose” thinks that there is an attitude problem with the low caste people, similar to the people form other religion.
And we know it is soon going to change. There is no space for discrimination when the society is moving toward progress.
